Get started with the new audio mixer in Production Truck!

In one of the most recent updates to Production Truck you’ll find the newest feature in a brand new Audio Mixer. Before this update you were limited to a single audio input. This meant being restricted to routing any audio sources you wanted to use through an external audio mixer. That setup nearly required a dedicated audio director to keep audio levels correct and the right channels muted.

We’ve moved past that sad time now though. The new audio mixer allows you to enable up to 4 audio channels and adjust their respected levels by sliding out a simple mixer element, or you can have the mixer open in a second window at all times.

So what can the mixer do?

As mentioned above the mixer allows the use of up to 4 audio sources. This means you can input your external audio mixer as usual and utilize audio from 3 cameras or other sources. Being able to utilize the audio from your cameras means you can now build a more well rounded audio experience for your broadcast. No longer are you restricted to using ambient venue audio from a single field mic or whatever audio the commentators headsets are picking up. You can now pull audio from your camera down on the court. This also means the ability to plug a handheld mic into the camera and being able to do sideline reporting without running long audio cables back to your audio mixer.

What are all these buttons?

At first glance you’ll notice new buttons and abilities with your audio. Below are definitions and examples for each button.

Mute
You can now mute not only the main output audio channel but each of new four audio channels. Easily turn on and off the audio channels that you’re not using.

Audio Preview (Headphones)
We’ve added a new button to the Main Audio Meter. This button outputs your audio to your computer speakers or into your headphones that are connected to your computer. Previously you would enable this from the AV Settings with the Monitor Audio checkbox. This feature is now available on all of the audio channels. You can enable the Audio Preview feature on any of the audio channels to verify the quality and levels.

Solo
The solo button can be considered almost the opposite of the mute button. When you enable the Solo feature on an audio channel you are choosing to only use that source, all other channels are muted. If you enable Solo on a second source than only those two sources are enabled. You can use this feature to easily choose which sources you want to use without having to use the mute buttons.

AFV

The AFV feature stands for “Audio Follow Video”. This is an advanced audio setting that let’s you connect an audio source to a video source. This way when you cut to a certain camera the audio source that corresponds to it will become the primary audio channel. You connect camera and audio sources by how they are correspond with the source numbers.
For example…

  • Camera 1 is connected to Audio Channel 1
  • Camera 2 is connected to Audio Channel 2
  • Camera 3 is connected to Audio Channel 3
  • Camera 4 is connected to Audio Channel 4

This is a great feature if you are using a camera on the sidelines with a reporter. As an example, if you have your sideline camera set to Camera 4 and your Audio Channel 4 input set to that camera’s audio, that audio channel will automatically become solo’d and become the primary audio. This makes it easy for you to cut to the reporter without having to worry about enabling the correct audio source or muting the unneeded audio channels.

Video Clips
You’ll also see that we have brought the new audio buttons to the video clips window as well. The Solo and Audio preview features are also available on your video clips so that you can guarantee full control over that audio source as well.

Getting Started

To enable the audio mixer you’ll need to go into the preferences window in Production Truck, go to the Advanced tab, and enable Advanced Audio Mixer Configuration. After this you’ll see the small arrow button next to the main audio meter. If you prefer to have the mixer available at all times you can also go to Tools in the menu bar and choose Audio Mixer. This will open the mixer in a second window.
